green fingers wooden fingers

Today... I'd have to say my boyfriend had a much more productive day than me !
He built a lovely kist in just a few hours...

It's not finished yet,
he is still doing some work to the top, and he plans to stain it with a  dark stain aswell.

♥ Love it

I on the other hand... saw these sweet flowers (Chrysanthenum's) at Builders Express... (R19.99 each) and decided I would grow some green fingers - even though, all I basically did was dig a hole, shove the plants inside it, and cover it up...

I thoroughly enjoyed it & am hoping for the best.

♥♥♥

Hope you are having a beautiful day :)

Weekend away in... Oudtshoorn

My boyfriend Bryce and I decided at the beginning of last week that we desperately needed to get away for the upcoming weekend.

We were curious to explore Oudtshoorn and its surrounding areas so I immediately started googling to find a place to stay. When I came accross the Berluda website, after searching for accommodation in the Oudtshoorn area, I knew that this was the place. We were not dissapointed, and had a wonderful experience at Berluda.

Oudtshoorn is a town in the Klein Karoo, South Africa -  renowned for its natural beauty and ostriches.

In the beautiful Schoemans-hoek Valley, halfway between Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves, you will find Berluda; a wonderful guesthouse with an equisite 4-star farmhouse as well as a number of charming cottages.

Visit Berluda here
After driving around for a while exploring Oudtshoorn we came across the gorgeous little coffee shop & bakery, Cafe Brule, in Baron Van Reede Street.  Part of the Queen's Hotel, this little gem serves the most delicious cappachinos and a variety of cakes.

Light meals are served between 07:00 - 17:00 and freshly baked bread is available every day.
What a lovely spot. ♥

Visit Cafe Brule (Queen's Hotel here )

After leaving Cafe Brule we realized it would soon be time for dinner and we began looking for a restaurant on the main road (Baron Van Reede Street). We drove past a number of places but Kalinka caught our eye and on walking in we just knew we would not be disappointed.

Both Bryce and I had the Beef Fillet which was grilled and served with chunky roasted vegetables, baby potatoes and a sherry mustard sauce. The fillet and vegetables were cooked to perfection and the sauce was delicious.  The service was first class and it was a great evening all round.  We will definitely visit Kalinka again.

One of the many things I loved about Oudtshoorn and its surrounding areas was the picturesque countryside with its many characterful farm houses and labourer cottages; I just wanted to take a picture of every single one as we drove past.

3 little houses in the distance

On Sunday morning after a hearty breakfast at Berluda, we left Oudtshoorn to explore Uniondale - a lovely little village close by to Oudtshoorn which is accessed through the picturesque Prince Alfred’s Pass.

We took time to drive around in search of antique shops to browse through.  We found the Uniondale Lodge, a very inviting place, where we enjoyed Illy cappachinos.  It is filled with antiques and antique jewelry was displayed in the lounge area.

I especially loved the antique vases on the coffee tables... ♥

This was me.. working on 5 heart rings yesterday in my workshop.
Photos were taken by my brother, after I decided that I needed to make my tweetering more interesting.

I always curiously look at other people's uploaded pics from their blackberry's etc and think its pretty cool to see a little glimpse into someone else's life for a moment.

Anyway pics.. and rings turned out good,
besides the first couple pics taken which ended with my brother saying things like.. " ah, no not this one, you look retarded." or "oh no your nose looks enormous in this one."

and.. here they are !

handmade life

" The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect.    " - http://www.buyhandmade.org/why-buy-handmade

Nothing you can find in any hypermarket, or walmart, can compare to something that has been handmade.
There is an undeniable piece of the maker in every handmade item – a spirit that invisibly marks every piece in a special way that no mainstream, mass produced item can.

I found this while reading Meagan Vissers' blog (meagenvisser.com) and I think her words just sum up what I'm trying to say perfectly.

"When you buy something that is handmade by an individual, whether you realize it or not, you are showing your support for another human being. You are saying, I’d rather buy this original oil painting from you and wait for you to ship it to me than head down to Rooms to Go and pick up a piece today that is twice as large and half the cost.
Why? Because of the quality. Because of the time, thought, and effort that went into your original work of art. The blood, sweat, and tears (figuratively speaking) that you went through to ultimately call this work “finished”. And most importantly, because I would rather give the money to you and help support a small business like my own, than to a corporation with mass-produced products that will never even know my name."
